Essential Equipment for Restoring Used Cars
October 15th, 2014 by admin

Restoring used cars is a great hobby, as well as a great way to cut costs of car ownership. A skilled and experienced car restoration expert can get even the most battered and bruised old cars into top-shape with just a few months of effort.

Before you can get started with used car restoration, make sure that you have the right equipment:

1. An indoor car mover

One of the things you’ll learn when you start restoring cars is that you need to move the vehicle very often. This can be a massive challenge when you are working with a car without wheels or tyres (common during the repair and refurbishing phase).

An indoor car mover can make the car moving experience a whole lot easier. If you’re serious about car restoration, make sure that you have one of these in your garage.

2. A well-stocked tool box

There is a common saying in the car restoration community – “You are only as good as your tools”. Restoring a car obviously requires tons of different tools, from spanners and wrenches of different sizes to screwdrivers, clamps, and hammers. Since high-quality tools can be expensive, we recommend that you start off with a small tool kit and grow it gradually.

3. An air-compressor

An air-compressor is arguably the tool you will turn to most often during restoration. It powers everything from hammers to impact wrenches, and makes your job a whole lot easier. Processes that take hours by hand can be done in a jiffy by using an air-compressor.

4. A quality creeper

A “creeper” is a small stretcher-like platform with wheels used to go underneath cars. You will need this often when working on old cars. Pair it up with a sturdy jack to make the restoration process a bit more enjoyable (and easier).

5. Angle grinder and paint stripper

Both paint strippers and angle grinders are invaluable tools for doing car body work. The angle grinder can help with cutting and shaping metal, removing rust and buffing up car edges. A paint stripper is a must for scraping off old paint. Without these, your car restoration tool kit is incomplete.

Restoring a used car is a long, challenging process. With the right tools and equipment, you can make it a whole lot more enjoyable.
